About Us

On the basis of the recommendations made at the first meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) and the Islamabad Declaration of May 1983, a 20-years perspective plan was prepared for the development of Sciences and Technology in the Islamic countries. This plan was approved by the Fourth Islamic Summit held in Casablanca / Morocco in 1984. This plan has identified Ocean Sciences as a Key Programme Area.

Islamic Foundation for Sciences, Technology and Development (IFSTAD) has been mandated to carry out feasibility and modality studies for establishing an operational mechanism.
The INOC Network was thus established by COMSTECH in November 1987 and became operational in April 1989. INOC is hosted by the Republic of Turkey, with its headquarters in Izmir.

The status of INOC is that of an inter-governmental, non-political and non-profit, autonomous body linked to COMSTECH.

Thus far, nine countries have accepted the INOC charter: Algeria, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iraq, Morocco, Pakistan, Senegal, Tunisia and Turkey. Several other OIC member countries participate regularly to INOC activities without having formally adhered to its charter.
